Bungie files trademark application for undisclosed project, “Matter”

Bungie has submitted a trademark application for a hitherto unknown intellectual property called “Matter”. The application, which was made on Friday 28th September to the European Union Intellectual Property Office (thanks, ResetEra), gives very little away, but it has been filed against categories 9 and 41, which represent “computer game software” and “online entertainment services” respectively. Most curiously of all, there’s a “graphical representation” accompanying the filing, which to all intents and purposes appears to be a logo: Bungie received over $100m as part of an investment from Chinese publisher,…

Here’s everything Minecraft dev Mojang announced at Minecon Earth 2018 (including the pandas)

Pandas are coming to Minecraft. There are other things too – the Village and Pillage update, a new free marketplace content called Inspirational Island, and the spin-off game, Minecraft: Dungeons, we told you about earlier today – but as pandas are the second greatest creature of all time, that’s the hook I’m hanging this news story on. As Minecon Earth 2018 wraps up, Mojang’s Tom Stone confirmed that the next update, Village and Pillage, will release in 2019. As well as “new friendly folk” – as the “pillage” part of…

Fortnite’s Kevin the Cube is on the move again – and he’s taking Loot Lake’s island with him

The island that recently untethered itself from Fortnite’s Loot Lake is now on the move. After Season 5’s mysterious purple cube (Kevin, to his friends) jumped into the lake, Season 6 kicked off with the island on Loot Lake levitating in the air. Given the purple vortex beneath it, many players suspect the mystery is somehow connected to Kevin’s shenanigans. If I sound confused it’s because I am; I’m not sure what’s going on, to be honest, but it seems that Kevin wants to relocate, and he’s taking the island…

Google has hidden a text adventure game in Chrome

A secret text adventure game has been discovered in the source code of Google Chrome. A Redditor found the easter egg by typing “text adventure” into google.com and opening Chrome’s javascript console. Beneath a warning reminding users never to manually copy and paste anything nefarious into the code, the console asks: “Would you like to play a game? (yes/no)”. While not exactly complex, the story – which is a mission to locate the missing letters of the Google logo by way of simple text directions – requires you to navigate…

Rocket League Cross-Play Seems Likely on the PS4

Now that Sony’s opened its doors to cross-play on the PlayStation 4, another title seems likely to jump aboard. Rocket League, which is one of the games that the Japanese giant’s previous policy blocked, is looking like it’ll support players across Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PS4 soon, as Psyonix has provided an update on the feature. While it didn’t specifically announce anything, explaining that these things take time, it pointed out how passionate it is about cross-play. “It is with the greatest joy that I can now acknowledge that…

Mojang unveils Minecraft: Dungeons, a new dungeon crawler set in the Minecraft universe

Minecraft developer Mojang has announced new spin-off game, Minecraft: Dungeons. A dungeon crawler set in the Minecraft universe – which makes sense given the name, let’s face it – has only a vague 2019 release window for now, and is currently only scheduled to release on PC. Here, take a look: Developed as a “passion project” by a “small and dedicated” team in Stockholm, Sweden, it’s inspired by their love of classic dungeon crawler games and will feature four-player co-op. “What exactly is Minecraft: Dungeons?” ponders Tom Stone on the…

PUBG’s next Xbox update addresses achievement issues and brings several “quality of life” additions

PUBG Corp. has revealed what it intends to tackle in the first two updates scheduled to roll out for PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds on Xbox in October. The first is a hotfix that addresses an on-going issue with achievements, where – “in some instances” – the “User ID sent to the server was not sent back to the profile”, which is a fancy way of saying the achievement system simply wasn’t working for some players. Xbox players: This week’s Community Post is here! We wanted to provide some insight into updates you…

We didn’t even know we wanted a Hearthstone pop-up book until now

Blizzard is releasing a Hearthstone pop-up book. Minecraft’s Better Together Update Could Yet Come to PS4

Fortnite wasn’t the first game to start the cross-play conversation: it was actually Minecraft. You may remember Microsoft announcing the Better Together update for every system but the PlayStation 4, because back then the Japanese giant wasn’t playing ball. It’s slowly opening up its doors, and while it’s currently only running a beta test in Epic’s behemoth Battle Royale, the expectation is that more third-party titles will eventually utilise the feature. So what’s the deal with Minecraft, then? Here’s what a spokesperson told Windows Central this week: “We are supportive…
