Play a photojournalist in the historically-inspired 1979 Revolution: Black Friday, out next month

Hi everyone. I’m delighted to share the news that 1979 Revolution: Black Friday, a story-driven adventure set within the real-world events of the Iranian uprising, will be available on PS4 starting Wednesday, 1st August. In almost four decades of playing video games, I can safely say 1979 Revolution is quite unlike anything else I’ve ever come across. Modern-day Iran isn’t exactly a familiar location for gamers (I’ve played more games set in Tamriel), but it’s the turbulent backdrop of Middle East politics as a setting for the story that makes…

Rare has announced that Sea of Thieves’ second major content update, Cursed Sails, will release for PC and Xbox One on July 31st – and there’s a brand-new trailer to accompany the news. Cursed Sails brings significant additions to Rare’s swashbuckling multiplayer pirate adventure, some of which the developer has shared in its latest blog post. Top of the list is a new roaming AI threat in the form of “fortress-like” ghost ships manned by literal skeleton crews – which, judging by the new trailer below, will haunt the Sea…

Hello Games reveals first trailer for No Man’s Sky’s imminent NEXT update

Hello Games has unveiled its first trailer for No Man’s Sky’s major, multiplayer-focussed NEXT update, which comes to PC, PS4 and – for the first time – Xbox One, on July 24th. NEXT’s flagship addition, of course, is multiplayer, which enables a small group to team up for bouts of planetary exploration, building, space combat, racing, questing, and more – all of which will be playable in both first- or third-person perspective. It’ll be possible to bump into – or prey on – random players too. That’s a genuinely exciting,…

Review: Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion (PS4)

Adventure Time has been a juggernaut series for Cartoon Network since debuting way back in 2010. Its 10-season run is about to come to an end, and over this span the escapades of Finn the Human and Jake the Dog have spawned six video game entries covering a wide variety of genres. The latest entry, Adventure Time: Pirates of the Enchiridion, sees Finn and Jake tackle the classic turn-based RPG formula. One of the very first things that becomes apparent when playing Pirates of the Enchiridion is this is definitely…

Microtransactions have been completely removed from Middle-earth: Shadow of War

Today’s the day the patch ripping the market and microtransactions out of Middle-earth: Shadow of War will be released. Hooray! Good riddance! The patch is live on Steam by the looks of things but I’m not sure about PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. After the patch, orcs recruited through Online Vendettas and Ranked Conquests are stored in your Garrison, and you spend Mirian to train, upgrade and customise them. In addition to the welcome removal of all that guff, developer Monolith has made significant alterations to the Shadow Wars part…

Interview: Flipping Through the Yoku’s Island Express Soundtrack with Jesse Harlin

Hearing Yoku’s Island Express described paints an interesting picture. It sounds like a weird game. A really weird game. Just listen to reviewer John Cal McCormick desribe the title: ” Yoku’s Island Express is a 2D, open world, Metroidvania, pinball game starring a dung beetle postman dragged into a battle for the fate of the world on his first day on the job.” It sounds absolutely bonkers, but luckily John liked it quite a bit, calling it a game that “frequently delights”. One aspect that frequently delights is in the game’s soundtrack.…
