Sony’s E3 2018 Showcase to Include Third-Party, Indie Reveals That Will Make Your Heart Race

Sony took its sweet time announcing its E3 2018 showcase, but it’s still managed to confuse absolutely everyone. A podcast featuring bigwig Shawn Layden seemed to suggest that there’d be no traditional press conference, but now a PlayStation Blog post has hinted that the event will be more familiar than originally expected.

As reported earlier, the spotlight will remain on four major exclusives: The Last of Us: Part II, Death Stranding, Spider-Man, and Ghost of Tsushima. We’ll be getting “deep dives” on all of these games, whatever that means. However, they’ll be more to the “press conference” than originally expected, as we can expect the usual raft of third-party and indie reveals.

“We’ll have stellar announcements from third-party publishers and independent developers, who are all busy devising innovative new experiences that will make your heart race and your emotions soar, whether you’re playing on PS4, PS4 Pro, or PlayStation VR,” Layden wrote. Maybe we’re going crazy, but a mixture of major exclusives with the usual smattering of third-party and indie stuff sounds like a traditional press conference to us?

But there’s still so much that’s not being properly messaged: will this be a live stage show like past pressers, or will it be pre-recorded like a Nintendo Direct? Are we getting live interviews during these “deep dives”, or gameplay narration? And can we expect proper announcements from third-parties on the scale of a Monster Hunter: World, for example, or is that out? Frankly, we’re confused.

Update (18:30 BST): A live audience will be in attendance at the showcase.
